10 Wasp Network (2019) – 5.9

Ana de Armas takes the starring role in this thriller alongside Wagner Moura and Penelope Cruz. This is another brilliant foreign crime film about five Cuban political prisoners who have been trapped in the United States since the 1990s. They were charged with espionage and murder.

Wasp Network has all the historical, criminal, and dramatic flair that viewers will love. Nonstop action mixed with captivating performances makes for a perfect combination. For any bilingual or Spanish-speaking viewers wanting to flex their language muscles, quite a bit of the dialogue is in Spanish. For English speakers, subtitles of the Spanish lines are included.

9 Sergio (2020) – 6.1

Sergio Vieira de Mello, played by Wagner Moura, is a UN diplomat, humanitarian, and negotiator in this movie that follows him as he navigates political missions during the U.S. invasion of Iraq. With plenty of political unrest, dangerous operations, and heart-wrenching loss, this film will keep viewers on their toes.

The film is a biographical drama based on Sergio’s time in Baghdad, his efforts to have the U.S. withdraw their troops, and his eventual death due to a terrorist attack at a UN base camp.

8 Corazón (2018) – 6.6

Ana de armas talks with her friend on the street at night in Corazon

In this poignant and compelling drama, Armas plays Elena Ramirez, a prostitute who has to fight against stigma and stereotypes to earn a visa so that she can seek medical help for a previously undiscovered medical condition. Corazón is a great film that’s so sad, it’s hard to watch twice (but viewers will want to).

This is another one of Armas’ films that is based on a heart-wrenching true story, and Armas acts alongside Demian Bichir, who plays Dr. Mario Garcia, the doctor trying his best to get Elena the help she needs. 6 The Informer (2019) – 6.6

One of the more light-hearted and fun movies on Armas’ list, Yesterday is about Jack Malik, played by Himesh Patel, who is a musician down on his luck who wakes up in an alternate universe where he’s the only person who knows about the Beatles. Upon the discovery, he creates a music career for himself and becomes wildly successful, marking yet another time the Beatles’ songs have been used in movies.

Yesterday is on Armas’ IMDb, but viewers won’t see her in the film. The entirety of her character, Roxanne, was tragically sliced from the final cut of the film. Roxanne was meant to be a complicating factor between Jack and his love interest, Ellie. But, because of Armas’ and Malik’s strong chemistry, the writers and directors made the decision to simply focus the romance on Jack and Ellie instead.
